Stay Aware, Stay Alert #ReadAgainstAlzheimers

  • Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and cerebral cortex, causing memory loss, speech changes, and changes in reasoning and behavior. Over time, this disease shrinks the brain and leads to neurocellular death.

  • There is no one answer to this question, as the exact cause for Alzheimer’s disease isn’t fully understood. Multiple different reasons can cause Alzheimer’s, some including:

Plaque protein building up in the brain, causing large clumps to form called amyloid plaques.

Tangles in the Tau Protein, which carries essentail nutrient to parts of the brain that are now being distributed.

Other risk factors include: Old age, family history ( genetics ), traumatic injuries, and lifestyle.

  • Some of the Symptoms include….

Memory Loss: Constantly forgetting recent conversations and appointments, losing items such as car keys, and getting lost in places that should be familiar, etc.

Critical Thinking changes: Individuals with Alzheimer’s might experience having trouble concentrating and challenging themselves with certain concepts, such as paying bills, using technology, and basic driving

Behavior: Alzheimer’s affects the behavior and personality of the individual causing them to express moods that are unusual from their “normal” personality. This can be presented as depression, isolation, anger, and/or delusions. ( This isn’t the only behavior change that can be experienced ).

  • As of 2026, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

However, some medications can be given to help manage the progression of the disease.

  • Places and companies are working on a cure. Universities such as Texas A&M are working on gene therapy, and Case Western, along with Northwestern, are actively working on restorative treatments for Alzheimer’s.

Some companies include Eisai and Biogen, using anti-amyloid to create an antibody to slow the decline, and Roche and Genentech are working on anti-amyloid to prevent the disease.

  • The #ReadAgainstAlzheimers campaign is to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and promote brain health activities, such as reading, that have proven to help delay cognitive decline. Although the requirements are simple, this campaign has the potential to be powerful due to the awareness and health benefits that can be implemented simply throughout everyday life. We aim to educate others, inspire healthy habits, and support research towards finding a cure.

Read Against Alzheimer’s and educate yourself along with millions of others.
