A.I. In Healthcare

Definition: Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is a complex, man-made computer system that performs high-performance tasks through the forms of reasoning, decision-making, language acquisition, and deep learning.

Issues with AI are…

Having to train medical staff on the complex operation of AI. This approach can consume time and resources. Additionally, there is an evident resistance to AI integration into the healthcare field due to its high possibility of replacing jobs.

Careers on the line

Multiple job positions are currently on the chopping block due to AI’s infiltration into the healthcare system. Some of the careers include:

  • Medical Coders - Responsible for managing codes for medical procedures and diagnoses

  • Radiologists - Responsible for interpreting scans such as CT scans and Ultrasounds

  • Laboratory Technologists - Responsible for testing patient samples

  • Pharmacy Technicians - Responsible for preparing and dispensing prescription medications.

  • Medical Collectors - Responsible for collecting payments from patients for medical services

The Da Vinci Robot was first developed in 1999 and was then FDA approved in 2000.

AI’s uses in Healthcare

AI’s uses have expanded into the field of healthcare and can now adapt to multiple different roles within this scope. Of course, there are pros and cons of having AI within these spaces, such as ethics and morals, but some of the physical examples of what AI can do in healthcare include:

Administrative Roles

AI has certain capabilities to organize, update, and optimize patient records for patient portals. Additionally, this complex computer system can automate repetitive tasks such as paperwork flow, billing information, and tracking inventory levels, causing fewer human errors.

Virtual health assistants

AI’s virtual assistant capabilities can answer patients’ questions via text, email, or calls with accurate to semi-accurate predictive AI responses. These chatbots can also help patients set up appointments, manage appointment calendars, and ask automatic patient follow-up questions.

Predictive analytics

AI’s complex structure gives medical facilities the capability to time the maintenance of medical devices through monitoring the device’s performance. Additionally, AI can collect data on stored supplies and predict when an order needs to be placed for a certain department.

Drug developments

In this field, AI can speed up the process of medicine development through the analysis of patient records, disease transmission history, lab results, and patient DNA. This crucial information can lead to massive breakthroughs and faster development of drugs and vaccines. Processes like these are actively being used by companies such as Johnson & Johnson.

Diagnostic analytics

Through the scope of diagnostic analytics, AI can operate on large-scale data analysis of patient data to detect trends and patterns. This information is then used to inform physicians' decision-making. AI uses items such as patient records, X-Rays, CT scans, MRI scans, Ultrasound, and surgical videos to detect and predict.
